Roger Federer and Johanna Konta have withdrawn from the Olympic Games.

The duo have added to a growing list of players that have withdrawn from the event in Tokyo.

For Federer, he has cited a setback with his knee injury after fresh concerns rose after his Wimbledon quarter-final defeat to Hubert Hurkacz.

In a statement on Twitter Federer hoped he would be back for the US hard court swing, “During the grass court season, I unfortunately experienced a setback with my knee, and have accepted that I must withdraw from the Tokyo Olympic games,” the 20-time grand slam champion said.

“I am greatly disappointed as it has been an honour and highlight of my career each time I have represented Switzerland. I have already begun rehabilitation in hopes of returning to the tour later this summer.”

Now Federer’s focus will be on ensuring he is available to compete in time for the US Open, where he enters the last slam of the year with him, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic all tied on 20 grand slams each.

As for Johanna Konta she has withdrawn after being unable to train due to testing positive for COVID-19.

The Brit announced the news on Twitter explaining that she developed symptoms in self-isolation when her coach tested positive just before Wimbledon.

It’s news that comes as sadness for Konta who was in good form heading into Wimbledon before having to self-isolate.

There is still time for more withdrawals from the Olympics as restrictions are tight in Japan and there being no crowds this year due to the Pandemic.

The tennis event is set to get underway on the 26th of July.
