Novak Djokovic described his win over Kei Nishikori as his best performance as he looks to win a first gold medal in Tokyo.
The Serb produced a flawless display to thrash Kei Nishikori and advance to the semi-finals of the Olympics.
A dominating win sees him now two wins away from achieving the one thing he is yet to win and that is the gold medal.
After his latest triumph Djokovic admits that he is playing as the rounds go on, “I’m very happy, my best performance in the tournament,” Djokovic was quoted as saying by tennishead.
“Matches are not getting easier, but my level of tennis is getting better and better. I’ve done that many, many times in my career. I know that I’m (the) kind of player that the further the tournament goes, the better I’m feeling on the court.”
The world number one also spoke about playing later on in the day as opposed to the 11am start time.
Heat and humidity had been a factor for the majority of the tournament with many players struggling.
However a later start time made a noticeable difference Djokovic said, “It was fantastic. Playing after five (pm) is completely different,” he admitted.
“Obviously, there is a little bit of a breeze, but still very, very humid, you sweat a lot, but you don’t have the heat, you don’t have the sun that, in combination with the humidity, is just brutal.”
Next for Djokovic will be Alexander Zverev who is the next highest player left in the tournament.
It’s a match-up that has treated him well with the Serb leading the head-to-head 6-2.
Djokovic will also be in the mixed doubles semi-finals as he and Nina Stojanovic thrashed Laura Siegemund and Kevin Krawietz.
They will take on Elena Vesnina and Aslan Karatsev for a place in the gold medal match.
Both matches will take place tomorrow.
