Liam Broady has shared his delight after beating Wimbledon semi-finalist Hubert Hurkacz 7-5 3-6 6-3.
The Brit recorded the biggest win of his career by beating the world number 12 in three sets.
Broady recovered from 4-2 down to win the opening set before losing the second set.
However an early break was enough for the world number 142 as he sealed his place in the last 16 of the Olympic Games in Tokyo.
After the win Broady shared his delight at the win and admitted that he’s noticed an improvement in his game, “It’s obviously a career-best win and at a career-high moment, coming in and representing GB at the Olympics, so it couldn’t have gone better,” Broady was quoted as saying by tennis365.com.
“I don’t think anyone expects very much of me, I think that kind of works well for me. It’s nice to get this result just to know that I’m doing some things right. Obviously to beat somebody of that calibre at the Olympics, you have to be doing better than I was, so it’s nice.”
Broady didn’t even know he was going to be playing until a few days before the Olympic Games after Dan Evans’ positive COVID-19 test.
The Brit spoke about the journey to Japan which was a challenge in itself, “It was a bit of a nightmare to be honest. I’m probably going a bit bald from it,” Broady joked.
“I found out last Friday and then things shut down a little bit over here for the weekend and I was flying on the Tuesday. Twelve hours a day trying to organise everything and luckily we got it all sorted.
“The biggest thing was I didn’t want to have a regret after my career and you never know. Maybe I will play in Paris in three years’ time, maybe I won’t, and I didn’t want to look back and say that I turned down the opportunity to represent my country at the Olympics.”
Now Broady moves into the third round with the Brit being two wins away from earning himself a medal match in Tokyo.
First step for the Brit is facing Jeremy Chardy on Wednesday.
