“There were so many times during the match when I thought Karen (Khachanov) was playing too good and he is going to roll away with the match and it was super tough especially in the fifth set and luck was on my side and we both really deserved it today”.

The first five games of the match went on serve and at 3-2 it was the Russian with three chances to break but the world number 12 bared down and saved all three and held serve.

The Toronto native had his first chance to break at 4-4 and he got the crucial break needed to serve out the first set.

After holding serve in the opening game of the second set the world 29 had a couple of chances for the early break and got it to take a 2-0 lead before turning it into a double break.

The world number 12 pushed back earning a couple more breakpoints and got one of the breaks back but the Russian was able to serve out the second set to make it a best of three.

The third set stayed on serve until 4-3 when the Canadian had two more break points but was denied by the Moscow native as he was able to hold serve before breaking to take a 6-5 lead and serve out the third to take a two sets to one lead.

The Nassau, Bahamas resident got an early break in the fourth breaking the world number 29 to love and managed to get a double break and served out the fourth set to send it to a decider.

The fifth set stayed on serve until 2-2 when the Canadian had three looks to break but failed to convert and at 4-4, it took Shapovalov four break points before he sealed the break and served out the match.

He will next face the world number one in Novak Djokovic and after the match, in his on-court interview, he gave his thoughts on the match.

“Obviously he is the best player in the world but I think anything is possible and when you look at the scoreboard on Friday it will be 0-0 so nothing else matters and it’s a tennis match and it can go either way and I have full belief in me and my team”.

Shapovalov is currently 0-6 against Djokovic and will be looking for his first-ever win on Friday.
