Stefanos Tsitsipas moved into the third round at Roland Garros with a 6-3 6-4 6-3 win over Pedro Martinez on Court Suzanne Lenglen.
Tsisipas dropped his serve in the fifth game, but he broke back to draw level to 3-3. The Greek player won the final three games with a break in the eighth game at deuce to claim the first set 6-3.
Martinez went up an early break to take a 2-0 lead at the start of the second set. Tsitsipas broke straight back in the third game and held serve at 15 to draw level to 2-2.Tsitsipas won the final three games including a break in the ninth game from 3-4 down to clinch the second set 6-4.
Tsitsipas earned a double break in the third game to open up a 4-1 lead. Martinez pulled one break back in the sixth game, but Tsitsipas converted his third break point in the seventh game to build up a 5-2 lead.
Martinez broke serve when Tsitsipas when Tsitsipas was serving for the match at 5-2. Tsitsipas bounced back by breaking serve with a backhand winner to close out the match.
Tsisipas, who has not lost a set after beating Jeremy Chardy in the first round in straight sets, will face a third round match against John Isner, who cruised past Filip Krajinovic earlier today. Tsitsipas leads 3-2 in her five head-to-head matches against Isner.
Tsitsipas, who leads the ATP Race to Turin, has improved to a Tour-leading 34 wins on the season. He lifted two trophies on clay at the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters and Lyon earlier this year.
Tsitsipas is aiming to improve on last year’s result at the French Open, when he lost to Novak Djokovic in the semifinal.
“I have had good weeks this year. I have had some good results, but of course, I feel like there is always better. I don’t see my performance so far as super excellent and outstanding, but I have been consistent and that’s very important to maintain that Race lead that I am looking for”, said Tsitsipas.
Pablo Carreno Busta came back from one set down to beat Frenchman Enzo Couacaud 2-6 6-3 6-4 6-4. Casper Ruud has extended his 2021 clay court with a 6-3 6-2 6-4 win over Kamil Majchrzak. The Norwegian player will face either Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, who beat Botic Van de Zandschulp 6-4 6-4 5-7 2-6 6-4 and is projected to face Alejandro Zverev, who beat Romn Safiulin 7-6 (7-4) 6-1 7-6 (7-1).
