Cristian Garin cruised past Fernando Verdasco 6-1 6-4 on his tournament debut after 1 hour and 27 minutes to reach the second round at the Madrid Mutua Open.
The clay court specialist from Chile fended off all eight break points he faced and converted his three break points to set up a second round clash against German Dominik Koepfer, who beat Reilly Opelka 6-4 6-4.
Verdasco, who was making his 18th appearance in Madrid, committed 32 unforced errors to Garin’s 15.
Argentine qualifier Federico Delbonis came back from a set and two breaks down to beat 2020 US Open semifinalist Pablo Carreno Busta 3-6 6-4 6-3. Delbonis will take on either this year’s Estoril champion Albert Ramos Vinolas or US Taylor Fritz.
Marcos Giron battled past Pablo Andujar 6-7 (8-10) 7-6 (7-4) 7-5 after 3 hours and 26 minutes. Giron will face two-time Madrid Mutua Open finalist Dominic Thiem.
