Top seed and 2020 Australian Open quarter finalist Ons Jabeur beat Stefanie Voegele 6-4 6-1 at the MUSC Health Women’s Open in Charleston.
After a trade of breaks in the first two games the opening set went on serve until the tenth game when Jabeur got her second break to take the first set 6-4. The Tunisian player earned two consecutive breaks in the second and fourth games and held serve after saving three break points. Jabeur reached the semifinals in Charleston. The Tunisian player set up a match against qualifer Alycia Parks, who cruised past US Grace Min 6-1 6-4.
Colombian teenager Maria Camila Osorio Serrano followed up her first WTA title in Bogotà last week with a 6-3 4-6 7-5 win over Magda Linette after 2 hours and 16 minutes
World number 135 Osorio Serrano broke eight times, including three times in the third set, and won four consecutive games in the third set to extend her winning streak to six consecutive matches. She converted on 73% of her break points.
Osorio Serrano set up a second round match against Christina McHale, who beat 2012 Roland Garros finalist Sara Errani 7-6 (7-3) 6-3. The match started with a trade of breaks in the first two games before Errani held serve to take a 2-1 lead. Errani broke serve in the fourth game at love in the fourth game. McHale broke back in the seventh game for 3-4, but Errani got her third break earning her chance to serve for the set at 5-3, but Mchale broke straight back to draw level to 5-5. The US player won the tie-break 7-3. McHale went up a break in the sixth game to take a 4-2 lead. Errani broke straight back in the seventh game for 3-4 after a double from McHale. The US player earned another break with a passing shot before sealing the win on her third match point.
Czech 15-year-old Linda Fruhirtova claimed the first WTA match win of her career after her opponent Alizé Cornet was forced to retire at 6-2 6-7 (7-9) 4-4. World number 499 Fruhirtova did not convert a match point at 6-5 in the tie-break of the second set, after failing to serve out the match at 5-4 in the second set. Cornet was forced to retire at 4-4 in the third set due to a right thigh injury. Fruhvirtova will take on Emma Navarro in the second round.
