Lorenzo Sonego followed up his win at the ATP 250 tournament in Cagliari with a 6-3 6-4 win over 2021 Rotterdam finalist and world number 40 Marton Fucsovics in the first round at the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters.
Fucsovics earned the first break in the fifth game to take a 3-2 lead, but Sonego converted his fourth break-back point in the sixth game to draw level to 3-3. Sonego held his serve in the seventh game before breaking serve on his third break at deuce in the eighth game to close out the first set 6-3.
Both players earned break points in the first four games of the second set, but they held their serve. Sonego converted his second break in the fifth game to take a 3-2 lead with his forehand. Sonego missed a match point in the ninth game, but he served out at love with a forehand passing shot.
Sonego set up a second round match against 2018 ATP Finals champion Alexander Zverev.
World number 58 player Alejandro Davidovich Fokina beat Matteo Berrettini 7-5 6-3. Davidovich Fokina went up a break in the second game to take a 3-0 lead. The Spanish player rallied from 0-30 down to hold serve in the fifth game. Berrettini broke back in the seventh game for 3-4 after Davidovich Fokina made two unforced errors and a double fault. Berrettini went up 40-15 at 5-6 on serve, but Davidovich Fokina came back to break serve in the 12th game, when Berrettini hit his forehand into the net.
Davidovich Fokina converted his fourth break point in the sixth game, when Berrettini hit his forhand into the net. Davidovich Fokina won four consecutive points from 0-30 down to fend off two break points in the seventh game to hold serve at deuce. Berrettini recovered from 0-30 down to hold serve, when he was serving to stay in the match, but Davidovich Fokina closed out the win on his second match point in the 10th game.
Last week’s Marbella champion Pablo Carreno Busta edged past Stefano Travaglia 7-5 7-6 (7-4). Travaglia did not convert two break points in the fourth game of the first set. Both players went on serve until the 10th game, when Carreno Busta saved three set points on serve. Travaglia fended off three break points in the 11th game, but Carreno Busta converted his fourth chance to win the first set 7-5.
Travaglia went up an immediate break in the second game of the second set. Carreno Busta broke straight back in the second game. The Spanish player saved two break points in the eighth game to hold serve for 4-4 at deuce. Travaglia saved three break points in the ninth game and one more chance in the 11th game. Carreno Busta went up a 3-0 lead, but Travaglia won three consecutive points to draw level to 3-3. Carreno won four of the next five points with a mini-break on the eighth point to close out the tie-break 7-4.
Casper Ruud cruised past 17-year-old Danish Next Gen rising star Holger Rune 6-2 6-1 in the Scandinavian head-to-head match to reach the third round, where he will face Diego Schwartzman.
Greek brothers Stefanos and Petros Tsitsipas saved two match points to edge Kevin Krawietz and Horia Tecau 7-6 (7-4) 3-6 11-9 in their opening match of the doubles tournament. The Tsitsipas brothers earned a set point in the 12th game of the first set but theu did not convert it. They came back back from 1-4 down to win a tight tie-break 7-4. Krawietz and Tecau went up a 3-0 in the second set before serving out in the ninth game. The Tsitsipas brothes fended off two consecutive match points before converting their own chance to win the Match tie-break 11-9.
