Hubert Hurkacz stunned Andrey Rublev 6-3 6-4 to reach the Miami Open final.
The 26th seed became the first Pole since Jerzy Janowicz in 2012 to reach a Masters 1000 final.
Hurkacz produced a dominant performance to defeat one of the ATP’s most in-form players in Andrey Rublev.
The Pole won 75% of his first service points as he dominated the match on serve and return.
A 5-1 lead was established in the first set as Rublev couldn’t handle Hurkacz’s attacking and defensive game.
After a mini-comeback from the Russian, Hurkacz served out the opening set in 40 minutes.
In the second set, the world number 37 continued the momentum and broke in the first game.
Despite facing three break points when serving for the Match, Hurkacz kept his cool and sealed a historic win.
After the match Hurkacz spoke about the significance of his win, “It means a lot, especially after winning a title at the beginning of the year,” Hurkacz told the ATP Website.
“I had a couple of rough matches. So I’m so happy that I came over and I was still trying to improve my game and trying to be a better player. This is really huge for me.”
The Pole is now 9-0 in Florida this season, where he is mainly based throughout the season, after winning the Delray Beach title at the start of the season.
Hurkacz will now face good friend Jannik Sinner in the final on Sunday and is looking forward to the challenge, “We played doubles together last week in Dubai. Now we’re playing in the final of a Masters 1000 event, so it’s going to be a fun match.”
Hurkacz is the first Pole in singles to reach the final of a Masters 1000 event since Jerzy Janowicz in 2012.
