Bianca Andreescu has tested positive for Covid-19 and pulled out of the Mutua Madrid Open which begins on Thursday.
The tournament had officially announced the absence as an undisclosed illness but shortly after the Canadian came out and confirmed the positive test. Andreescu is the latest player to have contracted the virus along with the likes of Novak Djokovic, Grigor Dimitrov and Daniil Medvedev.
After that tweet was posted on the tournament Twitter account, Andreescu issued her own statement on social media. Confirming that she is currently ‘feeling good.’ It is unclear as to if she is experiencing any symptoms. She had recently tested negative twice but then tested positive when she landed in Madrid.
“After testing negative twice before my flight to Madrid, I was sadly informed that I had tested positive upon arrival for Covid-19 and therefore will not be playing at the Madrid Open later this week.
“I am feeling good, I am resting, and continuing to follow the health protocols and safety guidelines,” Andreescu added. “I look forward to getting back on the court very soon.”
The 20-year-old hasn’t played on the Tour since making the Miami Open final a few weeks back. She had been recovering from an injury that forced her to retire during her Miami clash with Ash Barty where she took a hard tumble on the court and hurt her ankle.
Andreescu has won nine out of 12 matches played so far this season. In Miami she scored wins over Amanda Anisimova, Garbine Muguruza and Maria Sakkari. Elsewhere she reached the second round of the Australian Open and the semi-finals of the Phillip Island Trophy.
