Alizé Cornet comes back from a set and a break down to battle past Bernarda Pera in Charleston

Alizé Cornet came back from one set down to edge Bernarda Pera 4-6 6-4 6-4 after 2 hours and 52 minutes reaching the second round at the Volvo Open in Charleston. 

The first set started with three consecutive breaks, as Pera took a 2-1 lead. The US player held on her next service games to win the first set 6-4. 

Pera went up a break twice in the second set to take a 4-2 lead, but Cornet won four consecutive games with two breaks in the eighth and tenth games to claim the second set 6-4. 

Pera broke at the start of the third set and got another break to take a 4-3 lead, but Cornet broke back both times. The French player won the final three games and closed out the decider 6-4 with her third break in the 10th game. 

Amanda Anisimova rallied from one set down to beat Magda Linette 5-7 6-2 6-3. The US player of Russian origin avenged her defeat against Linette, who won their only previous head-to-head match 6-4 7-5 at Wimbledon 2019. Linette edged Anisimova 7-5 in a hard-fought first set which featured seven breaks of serve. Linette broke three times, but Anisimova pulled back on serve each time to draw level to 5-5. Linette got her third break in the 11th game to win the first set 7-5. 

Anisimova went up a double break in the second and sixth games to race out to a 5-1 lead. Linette pulled one break back in the seventh game, but Anisimova earned her third break in the eighth game to claim the second set 6-2. Ansimova converted her second break at deuce in the fourth game to take the decider 6-3. Linette, who made her comeback in Miami after three knee surgeries, committed 41 unforced errors. 

Paula Badosa went down a break twice in the second set, but she came back to beat Varvara Gracheva 3-6 7-5 6-1 after 2 hours and 26 minutes. Ajla Tomljanovic cruised past Christina McHale 6-3 6-0 after 67 minutes. Zarina Diyas saw off qualifier Nataliya Vikhlyantseva 6-3 6-1 after 1 hour and 14 minutes.
