Alexander Zverev has remained optimistic about his elbow injury as he prepares for more clay-court preparation in Munich.

The German is the top seed in Bavaria but has been troubled by an elbow injury which saw him lose to David Goffin in the third round in Monte-Carlo.

However speaking in his pre-tournament press conference Zverev remained optimistic about the future of his injury as he looks to build confidence ahead of Roland Garros, “Injuries happen in sports,” Zverev told Jannik Schneider.

“I had one at my elbow. Before the tournament in Monte-Carlo I didn’t play tennis for three weeks but I decided to play there. In these circumstances it was decent versus Goffin. To beat a player like him you need more practice.

“The elbow gets better weekly. I had special treatment last Friday, it has to heal completely and this will take more time. I have to remain careful with serving during the next weeks. After my problems in 2019 I practiced serve hours and hours on a daily basis. So I need a calm approach now.”

The German will likely play his first match on Wednesday or Thursday against either a qualifier or Maximillian Marterer. Also in Zverev’s half of the draw is Filip Krajinovic and Dusan Lajovic.

In the other half of the draw is Casper Ruud who will play Pablo Cuevas or Tennys Sandgren in his first match. For the Norwegian, a potential semi-final match against Aslan Karatsev could await as the Russian plays Federico Coria or a qualifier in his first match.

Play in Munich starts on Monday:
