Danish teenager Clara Tauson claimed her maiden WTA title with a 6-4 6-1 win over Viktorija Golubic from Switzerland in the final of the Open 6ème Sens Métropole de Lyon.
The former junior World number 1 player converted her sixth championship point to beat Viktorija Golubic after 87 minutes in just her third WTA Tour maind draw appearance.
Tauson won two straight-set matches in the qualifying round and did not drop a set in the whole tournament. She beat Ekaterina Aleksandrova 6-3 6-4, Timea Babos 6-2 6-3, Camila Giorgi 6-3 6-1, Paula Badosa 7-5 6-1 and Viktorija Golubic 6-4 6-1 en route to her first career title.
“I think I have been really solid, especially after the first set. I have come out good in every single match. I just kept my game going. It’s been a weird week like that, normally I have some fall-outs, but I haven’t had any of those this week, so I am very happy with that”, said Tauson.
The opening set featured seven breaks in ten games. Tauson dropped her serve in the first game, but she broke back in the fourth game to draw level to 2-2 lead. The 18-year-old player went up a break twice to take leads at 4-2 and 5-3, but Golubic broke back both times. Golubic went down 0-40 in the 10th game, but she fended off three set points to claw her back to deuce. Tauson sealed the first set with a break after Golubic made a double fault and a backhand error. Tauson raced out to a 5-0 lead with a double break in the second and fourth games and earned four championships points, but Golubic fended them off to hold her service game after four deuces. Tauson wasted her fifth match point and had to fend off two break points in the seventh game. The Danish player earned her sixth match point and converted her chance by forcing an error with a forehand after an hour and a half.
