Daniil Medvedev is through to the next round of the Australian Open after a relatively comfortable 6-2, 6-2, 6-4 win over Vasek Pospisil of Canada on the Margaret Court Arena.

A fast start for the Russian

The world number four wasted no time as in the opening game of the match as he got three chances to break the world number 61 and on his third opportunity broke the Vernon, BC native who attempted to come to net and sent a volley into the net for the early 1-0 lead.

The Canadian had a chance the very next game to break back but the Russian would save it forcing the error from the Bahamas resident and held his opening service game.

At 3-1 Medvedev had a chance to increase his lead as the Canadian was attempting to play a serve and volley game which forced lots of errors off his racquet. Pospisil would double fault to give the number four seed a 4-1 lead before he would serve out the first set to take it 6-2.

The Russian continues to dominate

The second set was much like the first and at 1-1 Medvedev off another unforced error from the Canadian had three break points and once again broke as Pospisil sent another volley into the net for the early 2-1 lead.

After holding serve the Russian continued to attack and off a Pospisil double fault he earned more chances to break and broke the world number 61 thanks to another error for a 4-1 lead. Once again he would serve out the second set to take it 6-2 and was one set away from the second round of the Australian Open.

A tight finish

The third set was the closest of the three played in the match and Pospisil was doing a better job holding serve and trying to get back into the match. At 2-1 Medvedev called for the trainer and took a medical timeout to have work done on his foot that needed a tape job.

From there it went with serve and at 4-4 the Russian earned three break points off three straight errors from the Pospisil and would break as the world number 61 sent a ball out.

Medvedev served for the match at 5-4 and had no issues closing it out for his first win of the tournament. After the match both players have a brief discussion and Medvedev explained what they had talked about during his on-court interview.

“Vasek can play really good tennis he just told me after the match that he didn’t manage to have the best preperation because of hard quarantine and that he hurt his back for a few days and was not practicing, it’s hard when you don’t play for three weeks to show your best tennis so I was lucky in this way but I know I have to come out here and win the match because that’s my job.”
