Italian player Lorenzo Sonego ended the best season of his career at world number 32 in the ATP Ranking and is getting ready to another great year in 2021.
Sonego trained at the Rafael Nadal Academy in Mallorca together with Felix Auger Aliassime and Emil Ruusuvuori.
“During the ATP Tour I talked with Casper Ruud’s coach. My coach Gipo Arbino asked him for information on the Rafael Nadal Academy because we wanted to spend a different week. They hosted us giving us the chance to train whenever we wanted. It was a very good week. I had the chance to train with Nadal. He has an impressive rhythm. By training with him I got used to play at a much higher rhythm. For this reason it’s useful to train with Rafa. I have not changed my training routine when I was in Mallorca”, said Sonego to Italian Sport Newspaper Corriere dello Sport.
Sonego grabbed the headlines last October, when he beat world number one Novak Djokovic 6-2 6-1 in the quarter final of the Erste Open tournament en route to reaching his first ATP 500 final, where he finished runner-up to Andrey Rublev.
“My rivals now know me, they study me and it will be more difficult next year, but I am relaxed. This is a good experience for the future. I have to continue playing these tournaments, stay calm e continue enjoying tennis”, said Sonego
Sonego reached the fourth round at the French Open last October after beating Taylor Fritz 19-17 in the tie-break of the third set.
“My best memory of the French Open is the five-set win win against Emilio Gomez in the first round. I really enjoyed the Vienna final despite the defeat. The best moment was last August, when the tour resumed in the USA after the lockdown”.
Sonego choge his training partner for the first week of training in Australia.
“I will train with Dusan Lajovic in the first week. We will be joined by Salvatore Caruso and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina during the second week”.
