David Goffin has confirmed that he will not be playing in next weeks’ St. Petersburg Open after testing positive for the coronavirus.
The world No.13 says he is feeling ‘good’ and is currently not experiencing any symptoms of the virus after testing positive yesterday. Goffin’s setback follows his first round exit from the French Open last week when he lost in straight sets to Jannik Sinner. After the match the 29-year-old admitted that he was struggling mentally on the Tour for motivation amid uncertainty caused by the Pandemic.
“Due to a positive result at my last Covid-19 test made yesterday, I am forced to withdraw from St. Petersburg,” he wrote on Instagram.
Goffin is hoping to recover in time for his home tournament that will start a week on Monday. The European Open is categorised as an ATP 250 event and is held in Antwerp. He will be seeking redemption at the event after losing in the second round last year to Ugo Humbert whilst being the second seed.
“I feel good up to now, I will quarantine and if everything goes will be back in Antwerp,” he said.
Since the outbreak a series of top players have tested positive for COVID-19. Novak Djokovic, Grigor Dimitrov and Viktor Troicki all caught the virus around the same time as the Adria Tour which took place in Serbia and Croatia. American player Frances Tiafoe had also tested positive back in the summer.
Goffin has experienced a mixed 2020 season where he has recorded a win-loss record of 12-9. His best results were reaching the semi-finals of the Montpellier Open in France, as well as the fourth round of the US Open. Although he has failed to win back-to-back matches in five out of the nine tournaments he has played in so far this year.
