Frances Tiafoe won the ATP Challenger title in Parma with a 6-3 3-6 6-4 win over Italy’s Salvatore Caruso.
Tiafoe won the first set 6-3 with a break in the eighth game. The young US player went up a break in the first game of the second set. Caruso broke back in the fourth game to draw level to 2-2. Caruso got his second break in the eighth game and served out the second set 6-3 after saving three break points at deuce in the ninth game.
Caruso earned a break in the third game to open up a 3-1 lead. Tiafoe bounced back by winning five of his next games with two breaks to win the third set 6-4.
Earlier last week Tiafoe beat 2019 Australian Open Junior champion Lorenzo Musetti 6-3 3-6 6-3 in the second round. The Maryland native is looking forward to a long rivalry with Musetti, who beat Stan Wawrinka and Kei Nishikori in the Rome Masters 1000 and won the ATP Challenger tournament in Forlì.
“I am going to have battles for years to come. Musetti is an unbelievable player and Italian tennis is doing great with him, Sinner, Berrettini and Fognini. Hopefully they keep going”, siad Tiafoe.
