On the heels of the opening days of the US Open, UbiTennis has tried to sum up the first round with a few statistical nuggets. With some help from the data published by the tournament’s website, here’s an overview of the most interesting numbers that emerged in Days 1 and 2 of the American Slam.

Who’s the youngest player? How many Slam winners will be featured in the second round? Who hit the fastest serve? All of these questions will be answered in the next few lines.

7the number of comebacks from two sets down so far: Garin (vs Blanch), Coria (vs Jung, who retired in the fifth set), Ruud (vs McDonald), Norrie (vs Schwartzman, the highest seed to fall), Cilic (vs Kudla), Murray (vs Nishioka) and Khachanov (vs Sinner).

10– the amount of such comebacks in Andy Murray’s career, four of which at the US Open (Melzer in 2008, Haase in 2011, Mannarino in 2015, and Nishioka in 2020). He hadn’t achieved one since the 2016 French Open (vs Stepanek). Sir Andy ranks first in this category alongside Roger Federer, Boris Becker, and Aaron Krickstein.

280 – Novak Djokovic’s record in the first two rounds of the US Open. If he wins against Kyle Edmund tonight, he will reach 29. Niether he, Nadal, Federer nor Murray have ever lost in the first round of the US Open.

225– the speed of Matteo Berrettini’s serve in kilometers per hour against Go Soeda (140 miles per hour), the fastest of the tournament so far. Serena Williams hit the fastest in the women’s draw, clocking at 200 km/h (124 miles per hour).

11– the number of Slam champions who reached the second round: Serena, Azarenka, Kenin, Stephens, Kerber, Kvitova, Osaka, Muguruza, Murray, Cilic, and Djokovic.

73– the number of Slams played consecutively by Feliciano Lopez (an all-time record). The record holder among currently active female players is Alizé Cornet with 54 consecutive appearances.

16– the American female players in the second round, the highest number since 1995. The men instead are 10, the highest tally since 2012.

6– the mothers who reached the second round: Serena, Azarenka, Bondarenko, Tig, Govortsova, and Pironkova. The latter is back to her winning ways after being sidelined for over three years due to injuries and pregnancy (her last match was at 2017 Wimbledon against Wozniacki).

8– the wild cards who are still in play: Scott, Bellis and Vickery in the women’s draw, Mmoh, Krueger, Cressy, Nakashima and Wolf among the men.

102-Serena Williams’ wins at the US Open. With her victory over Ahn in the opener, she set herself apart from Chris Evert, with whom she shared the all-time record at 101.

22– Venus Williams’ appearances in the main draw at Flushing Meadows. Before losing against Muchova on Tuesday night, she had never lost her opening match (she had reached the second round 21 times out of 21).

637– the ranking of the youngest player in the second round of the singles draw, the wildcard Katrina Scott (16 years old).
