Dominic Thiem beat Casper Ruud 7-5 7-6 (7-4) in the second match of the Thiem 7 in Kitzbuhel.
After losing the first set Ruud raced out to a 4-1 lead in the second set. Thiem clawed his way back into the second set by drawing level to 4-4. Ruud saved the second break point chance. The second set came down to the tie-break. Ruud earned a 4-1 lead, but Thiem came back by winning six consecutive points to win the tie-break 7-4.
Matteo Berrettini beat Dennis Novak 7-6 (8-6) 6-3 after 1 hour and 42 minutes. Berrettini earned the first break in the fifth game to take a 3-2 lead. Novak broke straight back in the eighth game to draw level to 4-4. Novak saved five break points in the ninth game at deuce. Berrettini saved three more chances in the 10th game to draw level to 5-5. Berrettini rallied from 4-5 down to win the tie-break 9-7. Berrettini got the only break in the second game and did not drop more than one point on his service game to win the second set 6-3.
Roberto Bautista Agut edged Karen Khachanov 6-4 6-3 in the final match of the first day.
