The 41st edition of the Mercedes Benz has been officially cancelled due to the exceptional situation by the coronavirus pandemic and following the measures imposed by the Government of Germany prohibiting the holding of sporting events until 31st August 2020. The German grass tournament will not be postponed until later this year. The 42nd edition of the Stuttgart tournament will take place from 3rd to 15th June 2021.
The Mercedes Cup, which made the switch from clay to grass since 2015, traditionally opens the grass season. Last year Matteo Berrettini beat Felix Auger Aliassiime in the final.
“Taking into account the developments of the ongoing Covid-19 crisis as well as the measures and restrictions associated with it, it is painful that the Mercedes Cup cannot take place as planned this year, but the health and safety of everyone is top priority”, said tournament director Edwin Weindorfer in a press release on Thursday.
