Donna Vekic spoke about her lockdown period during an interview to the Croatian newspaper Jutranji List via Skype. The Croatian player reached the fourth round for the first time in a Grand Slam tournament at Wimbledon in 2018.
“Wimbledon is my favourite tournament. We knew that this tournament would have been cancelled, but we were sad. I have not accepted the idea yet that Wimbledon will not take place this year, but the situation is the same everywhere, not only in the world of tennis. It will be a strange feeling when I will return to Wimbledon and to other tournaments in 2021, when the crisis is over. I will miss the grass season because I enjoy playing on this surface. I hope that the tennis season will resume this year, but I am aware that it may not be possible to return to the tennis court. The circuit will not resume until there are travel restrictions”, said Vekic.
Vekic is spending her lockdown period at home in her town Osijek. The situation is strange for tennis players, who are used to travel around the world.
“I have not spent so much time at home since I was ten years old. The situation is weird. I am trying to use time in the best way and stay with my family. I keep fit and I am running a lot to be ready when the season resumes. I think that I will be able to run a half marathon. I have to adjust to this situation. I am learning French and I spend time watching films and TV series. I cook a lot. I am dedicating my time activities, that I have no time to do when I travel while I travel around the world for the tournaments. I miss the tournaments and the adrenaline. The stop is a shock for me and my team. I keep in touch with my coach Zlatko Novkovic and I have created a Whatsapp with my colleagues and friends Maria Sakkari and Ajla Tomlianovic. We are all in the same situation. We can’t train at home.
