Fabio Fognini and Simone Bolelli cruised past Nam Ji Sung and Song Min-Kyu 6-3 6-1 in the Davis Cup Qualifier at the Circolo Tennis Cagliari to secure Italy’s spot in next November’s Davis Cup by Rakuten Finals in Madrid. The match was played behind closed doors due to the ongoing coronavirus concerns.
Fognini and Bolelli went up an early break. Nam and Song broke back in the sixth game to draw level to 3-3. The Italian players earned two more breaks in the seventh and ninth games to win the first set 6-3. Fognini and Bolelli broke twice in the second and sixth games to win the second set 6-1.
Fognini and Bolelli improved their win-loss record in the Davis Cup to 8-4.
“We are very happy to qualify. We will try to go again, for the second time in Madrid. The prize that I promised, to win for the people who are not here. We caught it. I am very happy for us, for Italy. We played with respect for the opponents. Matches are always tough in Davis Cup, but we wanted to play focused. We didn’t want to take any risks”, said Italian Davis Cup captain Corrado Barazzutti.
