French Open tournament director Guy Forget ha provided an update on Roland Garros, which could be the first Grand Slam affected by the coronavirus.
After Indian Wells and Miami and the next six weeks until the end of April have been cancelled due to the outbreak of the COVID-19, the European clay court season including two Masters 1000 tournaments in Madrid and Rome and Roland Garros could be in jeopardy.
Forget spoke to the French sports newspaper providing an update on Roland Garros.
Last Sunday France banned all gatherings of more than 1000 people in a bid to curb the spread of coronavirus.
“We will have to follow the recommendations from the French government and medical experts. Inevitably, the tournaments scheduled for the coming weeks are all exposed. It would be a problem to organize Roland Garros behind closed doors. Would it be economically viable ? By the time of Roland Garros, there is time left but at the same time things will move will happen quickly. I think of the health of the players and spectators. We will explore all the possibilities, but, in any case, the decision will not be to the French Federation. We will follow the recommendations. The big unknown at the moment i show low long it will last”, said Forget.
