Diego Schwartzman saves four match points to beat Pablo Cuevas in Buenos Aires

Argentina’s Diego Schwartzman came back from one set down to beat Uruguay’s Pablo Cyevas 5-7 7-6 (13-11) 7-5 after 3 hours and 42 minutes in the quarter final in Buenos Aires.

Cuevas wasted his chance to serve out the first set at 5-3. The Uruguayan player earned the break with a forehand winner on set point to close out the opening set 7-5, as Schwartzman was serving at 5-6.

In the second set Schwartzman broke serve at 5-5, but he did not convert his chance to close out the second set in the 12th game. Cuevas earned a match point at 6-5 in the tie-break, but Schwartzman fended it off. Cuevas wasted three more match points at 9-8, 10-9 and 11-10. Schwartzman earned his third set point at 12-11 and sealed the second set, as Cuevas sent a forehand wide.

Schwartzman opened up a 3-0 lead with an early break at the start of the third set. Cuevas pulled back the break at 4-2 after a backhand error from Schwartzman. Cuevas earned two more break points at 4-4, but Schwartzman saved them and held his serve.

Schwartman held his first match point, when Cuevas was serving at 4-5. Schwartzman received a medical time-out due to a muscle groin injury. Cuevas held his serve to draw level to 5-5. Schwartzman sealed the win with a break in the second match point in the 12th game.

Norwegian Next Gen player Casper Ruud edged past third seed Dusan Lajovic 7-5 6-1. Ruud broke serve in the second game to open up a 3-0 lead. Lajovic broke back in the fifth game and held his serve in the next game to draw level to 3-3. Ruud converted his fourth break point chance in the 12th game to close out the first set 7-5.

Ruud won eight of the last nine games including two consecutive breaks to clinch the second set 6-1.

Argentina’s Juan Ignacio Londero stunned his compatriot Guido Pella 6-4 7-6 (7-4). Londero fended off two set points on his serve at 4-5 in the second set with forehand winners before winning the final three points of the tie-break to close out the match after 1 hour and 55 minutes.

Portuguese lucky loser Pedro Sousa, who beat Brazil’s Thiago Monteiro 7-6 (8-6) 6-4.
