Argentina beats Croatia 3-0 at the Ken Rosewall Arena in Sydney to reach the quarter final at the inaugural edition of the ATP Cup. Argentina will face Russia in Thursday’s evening session.
Argentina’s Guido Pella beat Marin Cilic 7-6 (7-1) 6-3. Cilic earned the first break to race out to a 4-1 lead. Pella fought back by winning three consecutive games to draw level to 4-4. Both players held on their service games settin up a tie-break. Pella cruised to a 7-1 win in the tie-break.
Cilic earned three break points in the third game of the second set, but he did not convert them after a series of unforced errors. The Croatian player did not convert two break points at 2-2. Pella broke serve in the fifth game and held on his serve to wrap up the second set 6-3.
“I think I played very solid from the baseline. My service game was improving a lot after the first set. I started to feel much more confident with my game. I think in the end I was playing with great shots, very good with the baseline. I also played good volleys, so I think overall I did a very good match”,said Pella.
Diego Schwartzman beat Borna Coric 6-2 6-2 in the second match to give Argentina a 2-0 lead. The Argentine broke twice to race out to a 4-0 with a double break en route to winning the first set 6-2. Schwartzman went up a double break in the first and seventh games to take a 6-2 lead.
Maximo Gonzales and Andres Molteni came back from losing the first set to bet Ivan Dodig and Nikola Mektic 3-6 6-3 10-2.
