Two-time Next Gen ATP Finals champion Alex De Minaur beat Alexander Zverev 4-6 7-6 6-2 at the inaugural edition of the ATP Cup at the Pat Rafter Arena in Brisbane after 2 hours and 44 minutes scoring his first win in five head-to-head matches against his German rival. De Minaur converted four of his twelve break points and saved seven of the ten break points he faced. Zvevev struggled to hold serve and hit 14 double faults.
Zverev, who beat De Minaur in a thrilling Davis Cup tie in just under four fours and won his previous four head-to-head matches against the Australian player, broke twice to race out to a 5-2 lead. De Minaur pulled one break back and saved six set points before Zverev sealed the opening set on his seventh set point in the 10th game after almost an hour.
Zverev earned an early break in the first game to open up a 4-2 lead and had two break points for 5-2. De Minaur saved them and broke back in the next game to draw level to 4-4. De Minaur sealed the tie-break 7-3 to force the match to the third set. De Minaur broke serve twice in the first and third games to seal the decisive set 6-2. With the wins scored by De Minaur over Zverev and Nick Kyrgios over Jan Lennard Struff Australia clinched a 2-0 win over Germany.
