Roger Federer has revealed in a recent interview to AP that his major goal is to win at least one of the four Grand Slam tournaments or the ATP Finals in London or the Olympic singles gold medal.
During a good 2019 season Federer won his 8th title in Dubai, Miami for the fourth time, Halle and Basel for the 10th time. He beat Rafael Nadal to reach his 12th final at Wimbledon. In the title match Federer lost to Novak Djokovic after missing two match points.
At the ATP Finals in London the Swiss Maestro beat Novak Djokovic in the round-robin to reach the semifinals for the 16th time in 17 appearances at this event.
One of Federer’s main goals for the upcoming 2020 season is to win the Olympic singles gold medal, one of the few trophies missing from his trophy cabinet.
“Obviously after the year that I have had where I played really good. I felt good physically, did not have many issues apart from a little something at the US Open and little things here and there that are not worth mentioning. Beating Novak at the US Open and Rafa at Wimbledon, playing good tennis all round but just missing out on the big one, I would like to change that. I have to go back to the drawing board with my team. I need to train really hard and I think that would be a goal of mine, trying to win one of the big five titles plus the Olympics, which is six. One of those six chances I would like to take. I know that the French Open is always going to be more difficult, but any other title is a great feeling because I know how it feels, even winning the Hopman Cup, Laver Cup and all other events that I won like Dubai, Miami and Halle. It is just nice to win tennis events and leaving them as the winner. I think that the goal has to be to win as many titles as possible. If I can take home a big one, preferably Wimbledon, the US Open, the Australian Open, the Olympic Games whatever it may be, it would be amazing”,revealed Federer to AP.
Federer has traditionally trained in Dubai during the off-season to prepare for 2020.
“I would have preferred to celebrate Christmas in my home country, because my memories are based there”,said Federer to the Swiss newspaper Blick.
Federer has revealed his schedule for the next season, which will start at the Australian Open. He is planning to take part in all four Grand Slam tournaments, in four Masters 1000 events and three ATP 500 tournaments. He is planning to play at Roland Garros but it is unlikely that he will play in any other clay tournaments in the build-up to the French Open. The 20-time Grand Slam champion aims at winning the Laver Cup for the fourth time in his career in Boston after the US Open.
“My priorities would be the Australian Open, my exhibition match against Rafael Nadal in Cape Town, Dubai, Indian Wells, another exhibition match in Bogotà, Miami, Roland Garros, Halle, Wimbledon, the Olympic Games in Tokyo, Cincinnati, the US Open, the Laver Cup, Shanghai, Basel and the ATP Finals in London if I qualify”.
