Twenty-year-old Frenchman Ugo Humbert beat round robin first player Jannik Sinner 4-3 (7-5) 3-4 (3-7) 4-2 4-2 to finish third in the Group B. This win was not enough to qualify for the semifinal but Humbert played a solid match ending his season on a high note.
The first set went on serve with no break points and came down to the tie-break. Sinner fended off a break point at 4-6 with a backhand winner, but Humbert sealed the first set, when Sinner hit a forehand into the net.
Humbert got another break in the fourth game of the second set at 2-1, but Sinner broke back in the fifth game. The Italian player reeled off 11 of the next 14 points and got a mini-break to seal the tie-break 7-3.
Humbert got an early break on the deciding point in the first game of the third set. The French player held on his service games and sealed the set on his first set point in the sixth game.
Sinner did not convert two break points in the second game of the fourth set. Humbert broke serve at 30 in the third game to take a 2-1 lead. Sinner saved a match point, but Humbert sealed the win by holding his serve, when Sinner made a backhand error on the deciding point.
“I played a great match. It was the last match of the season and I am happy to have won it against a great player. It was really nice. It was a great improvement this year. I played a lot of great matches against great players. I have a lot of experiences, sometimes new ones, and I have a lot of confidence for the next season”, said Humbert.
