Dominic Thiem recorded his sixth consecutive winning match with a 7-6 (7-5) 5-7 6-4 win over Milos Raonic over 2 hours and 38 minutes. Thiem saved nine of the nine break points.
Thiem rallied from 1-3 down by winning five consecutive points to earn three set points at 6-3. Raonic saved the first two set points, but Thiem sealed the first set on the 12th point with a backhand error from Raonic.
The Canadian player fended off three break points at 4-4 in the second set and broke serve in the 12th game with a backhand volley to force the match to the third set.
Thiem broke serve in the ninth game to take a 5-4 lead after three forehand errors from Raonic and sealed his 46th match win this season with a forehand winner. Raonic hit 54 winners and 30 aces.
Thiem will face either David Goffin or Grigor Dimitrov.
“His serve was unbelievable today. He served almost his serves between 205 kph and 230. When you have your chances you feel under so much pressure because you know you won’t have many. The draw is unreal, there are only top players. It was already a horrible draw for me in the round and it won’t get any easier from here”,said Thiem.
