Winning the Wimbledon title doesn’t guarantee success in Canada, especially on the WTA Tour. In fact the last woman to have won both tournaments back-to-back was Stefi Graf 26 years ago in 1993. Simona Halep will be hoping to follow in Graf’s footsteps when she heads to the court.

The world No.4 impressed many with her win over Serena Williams in the final at the All England Club. Producing a near-perfect game plan to make the 26-time grand slam champion look somewhat ordinary.

“The sensations are strange, because I have not trained lately. I can say that the rhythm is not there yet. But I feel good on the court, I feel like I’m playing. But it will be difficult the first week to find my rhythm.” Digi Sport quoted Halep as saying on August 4th.

Halep will be also being playing in the doubles draw after teaming up with teenage talent Fernandez. A partnership that was formed with the help of tournament organisers. The Romanian was runner-up in the doubles tournament back in 2016 with Monica Niculescu.

“I asked the tour manager if he had someone in doubles. I asked some Romanian (players), but they were already with other players. That’s how this young woman was recommended to me. I hope we play well and win some matches. I am glad that I play with her, because she is young and she needs experience,” Halep commented.
