WIMBLEDON: Simona Halep has become the first Romanian player in history to win a singles title at Wimbledon after crushing an error-stricken Serena Williams 6-2, 6-2, in the final on Saturday.
Contesting her first Wimbledon final at the age of 27, Halep dictated from the onset. Bullying Williams around the court and hitting an array of spectacular shots in a 57-minute Masterclass. The near-perfect performance saw the former world No.1 produce only three unforced errors as well as 13 winners. In contrast, Williams leaked 25 unforced errors along with her 17 winners.
“It was the best match I have ever played,” Halep told BBC TV.
“I had nerves. My stomach wasn’t well before.”
22 grand slam titles separates Halep from Williams, but it was the Romanian who got off to a blistering start. Within just 11 minutes, she raced to a 4-0 lead. Breaking at the very start with the help of an unforced forehand error from the American, before securing a double break with ease. Firmly in the driving seat, the seventh seed closed out the opener in near perfect fashion. Committing only two unforced errors.
Halep’s ability to match Williams’ pace continued to draw frustration and mistakes from the 37-year-old, who looked lost on court. She had all the answers to what was asked of her as she continued her offensive five games into the second set. This time it was a failed Williams backhand drive that drifted beyond the baseline. Elevating Halep to a set and a break lead.
From then on, the outcome of the match was in little doubt. Going on to break once again, Halep sealed victory with a love service game. Prompting her to fall onto her knees in disbelief. Recording only her second ever win over Williams to claim her second grand slam title.
“It was my mum’s dream. When I was 10 or 12 she said if I wanted to do something in tennis I would have to win Wimbledon.” The new champion reflected.
The triumph once again prolongs Williams’ bid to claim a record-equalling 24th grand slam title. She hasn’t won a title since becoming a mother. Her last triumph was in January 2017 at the Australian Open.
“She played out of her mind,” said Williams. “I was like a deer in headlights.”
Prior to this year, Halep had only ever played one WTA final on the grass. That was back in 2013 when she won the Rosmalen Open. Making her latest run even more extraordinary.
“I have worked a lot to change my game a little bit to be able to win games on the grass. It was never easy because I like to run a lot and here at Wimbledon you can’t slide.” She explained.
“This year I started to feel the ball a little bit. When it comes to me I know what to do with it.’
“It was an amazing year, an amazing tournament and I can’t wait to come back.”
Halep leaves the tournament with 2000 ranking points and prize money of £2,350,000.
It is the seventh year in a row the women’s Wimbledon final has ended in straight sets.
