World No.1 Novak Djokovic is already Serbia’s most successful tennis player of all time and now there is going to be a building dedicated entirely to him in Belgrade.
Plans are underway for a museum to be opened up in the centre of the capital, according to Djokovic’s father Srdjan. Speaking to RTS Serbia, Djokovic senior said the venue is set to be opened up in 2020 with the exact date yet to be confirmed. The location of the museum is set to be on the Knez Mihailova Street. A prime shopping district in Belgrade and is one of the oldest in the country. There has been no comment so far about about what items will be on display.
“We are going to open the museum at the center of the city. There is a huge interest on the part of both local and foreign tourists, particularly Chinese. Novak is highly popular in China,” Srdjan told RTS.
Djokovic has won 75 ATP titles so far in his career with 16 of them being at grand slam level. Only Rafael Nadal (18) and Roger Federer (20) have won more majors in men’s tennis. In terms of prize money he has won more than any other player in the history of the sport with his earnings currently standing at more than $134 million. This week is also Djokovic’s 262nd at world No.1.
His most recent achievement took place at Wimbledon, where he defeated nemesis Federer in a marathon final. The five-hour encounter saw him save two match points on route to claiming the title. During that match, Djokovic had to contend with the crowd who sided with Federer throughout. Something that has been praised by his father.
“What happened a few weeks ago at Wimbledon was a fantastic thing. He has shown once again that he is a mental boulder, made of the hardest rock possible, not only physically but also mentally. With his unprecedented mental strength, he has been able to get that horrible tough match,” he said.
Djokovic will miss next week’s Roger Cup in Canada is order to have a longer rest period. He will return to action at the Western and Southern Open in Cincinnati. The tournament gets underway on August 12th and is set to be Djokovic’s only opportunity to tune up his game ahead of the US Open.
