Nick Kyrgios has revealed mental health issues stalled his 2019 season as he prepares to face Gilles Simon in Washington.
The Australian is playing his 12th tournament of the 2019 season in Washington this week but earlier this year missed Roland Garros.
There were suggestions of an injury that ruled him out of Paris earlier this year but Kyrgios now confirmed that it was mental health issues that was the problem.
Speaking after his entertaining 7-5 6-4 win over Thai-Son Kwiatkowski in the American capital, the Australian is now in a much better place, “I haven’t been playing too much tennis, being going through some mental struggles, but super happy with the win,” Kyrgios said after his win.

“I played well today and I just came through, The same thing for me every single match. Serve big and play big and back my instincts. That’s the way I’ve been playing my entire career and we’ll see how it goes.”
Next up for Kyrgios is the 11th seed Gilles Simon and Kyrgios is searching for his 14th win of the year in their second round match in Washington.
It will be the first meeting between the two, who play completely opposite game styles although the faster surface should favour Krygios.
This is all in preparation for the US Open, where Kyrgios will look to improve on his third round finish last year, where he lost to Roger Federer.
The third round is the best the 24 year-old has achieved at the US Open, which is a feat he produced on two other occasions.
