Roger Federer is feeling confident at Roland Garros after winning his 400th grand slam match to reach the second week in Paris.
The 20 time grand slam champion sealed his place in the fourth round of Roland Garros with a 6-1 6-3 7-6(8) win over Casper Ruud.
It was a comfortable first two sets before Federer had to fight off a late surge from the Norwegian to advance into the last 16 in Paris.
After missing the French Open for the past few years, the world number three has returned with confidence as he is yet to drop a set at this year’s tournament.
Speaking after his win over Ruud yesterday, Federer said he is happy with the way he is playing after limited expectations, “A few months ago I didn’t know what to expect with anything, really. At this point, now I know where my level’s at,” the Swiss admitted.
“I still don’t know exactly where my absolute best is, you know, but I feel like it could be there. So I’m happy I’m putting myself in a position like this in a fourth round of the French Open after not having played so many years here.
“I think for me the first goal has been reached by getting this deep into the tournament, and knowing where the game’s at.”
Although he may be confident, there is still a long way to go for Federer to be taken as a serious contender for the title as he is in the same half as Rafael Nadal.
However how the Swiss has adapted to playing on the surface after his long absence has been a pleasant surprise for many.
Next up for Federer will be Leonardo Mayer, who ended Nicolas Mahut’s run at Roland Garros with a four set win.
