Kevin Krawietz and Andreas Miez beat Jeremy Chardy and Fabrice Martin 6-2 7-6 (7-3) in their ninth tournament as a team without facing a break point in the final of the Roland Garros doubles final.
Krawietz and Miez, who beat Oliver Marach and Mate Pavic in the third round, have become the first all-German doubles team to win a men’s doubles Grand Slam title. The previous German doubles champions at Grand Slam level were Michael Stich at Wimbledon 1992 and Phillip Petzscher at Wimbledon in 2010 and 2011.
Krawietz and Mies cruised through to a 4-0 lead with a double break in the opening set and held their next service games to win the first set 6-2.
Chardy and Martin fended off a break point in a marathon game at 5-5 to force the second set to a tie-break.
Krawietz and Miez got two consecutive mini-breaks at 3-4 before closing out the match with a forehand volley from Mies.
Krawietz and Mies reached the semifinal in Budapest and won two Challenger titles in Marbella and Heilbronn.
“Every match was special. The first round we played against Guinard and Rinderknecht before facing fourth seeds Marach and Pavic. We have nothing to lose and maybe this was a very big step for us. After this match, we were very confident”, said Krawietz.
