Former world No.1 Serena Williams will have Swarovski ® crystals on her outfit for the Wimbledon champions based on inspiration from ‘past generations.’
Nike has released details about what the American will be wearing at the upcoming grand slam, where all players participating are required to wear only white. The central focus of Williams’ outfit is the swoosh brooch located on her top. Nicknamed ‘the Broosh,’ it is made up of 34 crystals to mark the last time Williams won Wimbledon (aged 34).
“I also wanted her to feel like it was something her grandmother could have worn, but of course give it a modern spin and make it just right for Serena,” says Abby Swancutt, Global Design Director for NikeCourt.
In recent years Williams has turned heads on the court for what wears. At the 2018 French Open she wore a all-back catsuit. Something she said made her feel like a superhero, but it was later criticised by the head of the French tennis federation. Bernard Giudicelli vowed to introduce a new dress code to regulate players’ uniforms. Saying “I think that sometimes we’ve gone too far.” Meanwhile this year she wore an outfit designed by Virgil Abloh with French words for Mother,’ ‘Champion’, ‘Queen’ and ‘Goddess’ covering it.
Williams will be seeded 11th at the upcoming Wimbledon Championships, which will be her first and only grass-court event this year. She is already a seven-time winner at The All England Club. Only Martina Navratilova has won the tournament more times than her in the Open Era. Should Williams win again this year, she would equal Margaret Court for the most grand slam titles won in history with 24 trophies.
It is unclear as to what kind of shape the 37-year-old is currently in. Williams has been hit with injury issues concerning her ankles and knees. She has won nine out of 12 matches played in five tournaments so far this season. Her best run was to the quarter-finals of the Australian Open. Despite her mixed results, Former player and ESPN analyst Chris Evert believes Williams is still a threat at the upcoming tournament.
“On the grass, we also can’t forget that’s her best surface. That’s a surface that her game, with the power, with the free points on the serves, she’s the most effective on the grass. I have a feeling she’s been practicing hard, and I never think you can count her out.” Said Evert.
The Wimbledon Championships will get underway on Monday.
