Brazilian qualifier Beatriz Haddad Maia upset defending champion Anna Karolina Schmiedlova 7-6 (7-3) 7-6 (8-6) in a hard-fought match after 2 hours and 32 minutes at the Claro Open Colsanitas in Bogotà. The match was interrupted twice by rain.
World Number 165 Haddad Maia has reached her second quarter final this season after Acapulco, where she came through the qualifying round.
“I knew it was going to be a tough match. She won here last year. This is one of the toughest tournaments to play. The conditions make it tough to play here in Bogotà. We stopped two times and then came back to the court. It’s not easy because I was leading both times when we had to stop, so I am very happy that I could control my nerves and keep doing what I need to do. We stopped two times and then came back to the court”, said Haddad Maia.
Haddad Maia will face Sara Sorribes Tomo, who battled past Ana Bogdan 6-4 4-6 6-4 to reach the quarter final.
US 17-year-old Amanda Anisimova beat her compatriot Varvara Lepchenko 6-4 6-4. Maria Camila Osorio Serrano battled past US lucky loser Kristie Ahn 6-4 6-7 6-3. Ahn had previously beaten 2017 Roland Garros champion Jelena Ostapenko in the first round.
