Venus Williams Reaches Settlement Over Fatal Car Crash

A legal case involving the death of a 78-year-old man was resolved on November 15th, according to court documents.

Seven-time grand slam champion Venus Williams has settled a legal dispute with the family of a man who died following a car crash involving the tennis player.

The incident happened on June 9th, 2017 in West Palm Beach, Florida. An SUV driven by Williams was sticking out at an intersection and was t-boned by another vehicle that was unable to stop in time.

Following the crash, two people went to hospital. The female driver of the car which went into Williams’ SUV and her husband. The women suffered broken bones as well as other injuries, according to her attorney Michael Stringer. Meanwhile, her husband, 78-year-old Jerome Barson, succumbed to his injuries after spending almost two weeks in ICU.

Both Williams and Barson has been cleared of any wrongdoing in the accident. A police report concluded that Williams’ vehicle was cut off by an unidentified third vehicle. The incident occurred as she was trying to cross a busy highway near her home, which set off a series of events. Ending with Barson’s car slamming into the side of Williams’ SUV whilst travelling at 65 kph.

“Based upon this investigation and relevant Florida state statutes, no charges will be filed in this case,” the report said.

At the 2017 Wimbledon Championships, Williams broke down in tears when questioned about the accident during a press conference. She hasn’t spoken publicly about the incident due to the ongoing legal proceedings that was taking place. However, Williams did write a post about the accident on Facebook shortly afterwards.

“I am devastated and heartbroken by this accident. My heartfelt condolences go out to the family and friends of Jerome Barson and I continue to keep them in my thoughts and prayers.” She wrote on June 30th, 2017.

There has been no details released about the terms agreed between the two parties. According to tmz.com, who obtained footage of the crash, the financial settlement will cover certain expenses. It is understood that both sides paying their own attorney’s fees.

Williams hasn’t played on the tour since her third round loss to sister Serena at the US Open. She is expected to return to competition at the start of January in New Zealand at the ASB Classic. So far in her career, Williams has won 49 WTA titles.
