Thirty-four year old Tunisian Malek Jaziri upset world number 5 Alexander Zverev 7-6 (7-4) 2-6 6-4. Jaziri converted all his three break points, while Zverev converted just four of his 17 break point opportunities.
Zverev got the first break of the match in a four-deuce second game. Jaziri broke straight back in the third game. Jaziri saved four break points in a eight-deuce eighth game to draw level to 4-4. Both players went on serve with no break points setting up a tie-break. Jaziri took the 7-4 edge in the tie-break.
Zverev bounced back by getting an immediate break in the first game of the second set. He held his next three service games before getting the double break on his fourth opportunity in a five-deuce seventh game and served out for the second set at 30 in the next game.
Jaziri earned the first break of the third set at 30. Zverev converted his third break-back point in the third game. The decider went on serve until the 10th game when Jaziri came back from 40-30 down on return by winning two consecutive points to break serve at deuce securing his spot in the quarter final. Zverev smashed his raquet on the court after his defeat. Jaziri will face Nikooz Basilashvili in Friday’s quarter final. The Georgian player beat Fernando Verdasco 7-6 (7-4) 6-4.
