US Open finalist, Juan Martin Del Potro has qualified for the Nitto ATP World Tour Finals after a straight sets win over Karen Khachanov at the China Open.
The Argentinian defeated his Russian opponent 6-4 7-6(4) to reach the quarter-finals in Beijing and qualify for the season-ending finale in London next month.
The win means Del Potro will make his first appearance at the ATP Finals for the first time in five years after battling multiple wrist surgeries in the last few years.
The 30 year old has had an amazing year winning Indian Wells, beating Roger Federer in the final, as well as reaching the US Open final, where he lost to Novak Djokovic.
After his victory in Beijing, the Argentinian seemed delighted at the news in what has been an emotional season, “I’m happy to get in London after five years,” Del Potro explained.
“It will be an amazing moment for me. I will love to be part of the eight players, to make that event. Of course, it’s a very special tournament for us. I will be excited to do well in London.”
The former grand slam champion joins Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic at next month’s Nitto ATP Finals in what is to be an amazing spectacle in London.
In the current Race To London rankings, Alexander Zverev, Marin Cilic, Dominic Thiem and Kevin Anderson look set to join them as they look to confirm their spots this month.
As for Del Potro he will now play Filip Krajinovic in the last eight of the China Open on Friday as he looks to build his much needed momentum.
