Tuesday at the US Open featured arguably the best match of the tournament so far with Rafael Nadal edging his way past Dominic Thiem in five sets.
The roller coaster clash between the two saw the world No.1 get bageled in the first set before fighting his way back in what was a classic that lasted almost five hours. Hitting 55 winners to 49 unforced errors compared to Thiem’s tally of 74 and 57. Nadal will take on 2009 champion Juan Martin del Potro in the semi-finals. The Argentine defeat John Isner in four sets earlier in the day.
In the women’s draw, Serena Williams kept her chances of winning a record-equalling 24th grand slam title alive. The 17th seed fought back from a 2-4 deficit at the start of the match to win 6-4, 6-3, against Karolina Pliskova. She will next play Anastasija Sevastova, who has become the first Latvian player in history to reach a US Open semi-final. Sevastova downed Sloane Stephens in straight sets.
