Serena Williams says she is ready for a new beginning in tennis after she lost to Angelique Kerber in the Wimbledon final.
The 23 time grand slam champion produced an underwhelming display as she lost the Wimbledon final to Angelique Kerber, 6-3 6-3 in under an hour. The German became the second ever player to beat Serena Williams on more than one occasion in a grand slam final with the other player being Serena’s sister, Venus.
The American was looking to tie, Margaret Court’s record of 24 grand slam victories in today’s final however the American lacked that cutting edge to beat a sensational Kerber, who claimed her third grand slam title. The 25th seed has seen the positives of the last two weeks and has described this as just the beginning of her journey, “I don’t know. I feel like I have a ways to go. This is literally just the beginning, literally just the beginning,” Williams explained. “It’s good to just continue that path and just continue to keep going for me. I just feel like I’m taking the steps in the right direction. I took a giant step at Wimbledon. But my journey has just began. Just have to keep going.”
Serena also reflected on her mental state as this is only her fourth tournament since giving birth ten months ago, “Really just these two weeks were so mental for me. I won matches. I was really mentally fighting for literally every match. I did the best that I could every match that I played.”
Next for the American is the hard court swings which she enters as the world number 28, climbing up 153 places in the world rankings from the start of Wimbledon, “I took some time off to train and get ready for the Grand Slams. I definitely am going to continue to play and just work on my game, work on staying in there.”
The American will look to win her eighth Wimbledon title next year as she looks to compete on a regular basis and aims to clean up her unforced error count. Next up for Serena is the tournament in San Jose, which starts in a couple of weeks time.
