Jelena Ostapenko has admitted that she needs to be more consistent in the key matches as she bowed out of Wimbledon to Angelique Kerber.
The Latvian suffered a 6-3 6-3 defeat to Angelique Kerber, in what was a rather disappointing display from Ostapenko in the semi-finals of Wimbledon. The 2017 champion manged to hit 30 winners although it was her 36 unforced errors that proved costly for the 12th seed.
After the match, Ostapenko acknowledged that if she wants to win more grand slams, she will need to become a more consistent player in the future, “I mean, just in general I think I have to play very consistent. On this level, if I’m doing so many unforced errors, it’s not going to work,” the Latvian explained. “Players like Angie, she’s very consistent. If I want to play on that level, I have to reduce my unforced errors.”
The former grand slam champion also added that Centre Court was playing much slower, which seemed to have helped the German in playing so well, “I think the Centre Court is much slower than the other courts I played before,” Ostapenko claimed. “I think she had really many advantages because of that. My shots were not that effective on such a slow court.”
However the Latvian did reflect on the positives of this week including the experience that she has managed to gain throughout the two weeks in London, “I think I had two great weeks here. Of course, today is not the result I wanted. I think I can still learn something. Everything will come with experience. But in general, I think I did pretty well these two weeks, got my confidence back.”
Jelena Ostapenko will hope to use her confidence to produce another good American hard court swing this summer.
