Alexander Zverev only dropped three games in the last two sets as he produced a stunning second day performance to defeat Taylor Fritz 6-4 5-7 6-7(0) 6-1 6-2 in the second round of Wimbledon.
The German entered day two of his clash with Taylor Fritz having been two sets to one down on Court One as the big hitting match-up was suspended last night due to darkness. The fourth seed had it all to do and didn’t waste time in breaking down his American opponent as he hammered some big serves and dangerous forehands. On the other side, Fritz didn’t seem to happy stopping last night and it was clear to see in the opening stages why that would be as it appeared his momentum was halted.
The world number three wrapped up the fourth set in 23 minutes as his big forehand and fantastic movement saw him steamroll past an unmotivated Fritz. The fifth set started with the American saving multiple break points for a tough first hold. The 20 year old was in unchartered territory as he was looking to make a rare third round appearance at a grand slam.
However the German continued to roar to victory as some impressive returns made sure that he would serve for the match. The 21 year old sealed the last set in 41 minutes as he progressed to the third round of Wimbledon.
The German will now play erratic Latvian Ernests Gulbis tomorrow for a spot in the second week of Wimbledon for the first time.
