Serena Williams has withdrawn from her blockbuster fourth round match with Maria Sharapova at Roland Garros due to an Arm injury.
The 23 time grand slam champion was due to meet Sharapova in a mouth-watering fourth round clash on Monday afternoon, however the American has revealed that a right pectoral muscle means that she can no longer play at Roland Garros this year. The injury means that Serena has withdrawn from a grand slam, mid-tournament for the first time in her career.
The former world number one, who has played six days in a row since her first singles match as she has also participated in the doubles with her sister Venus Williams, said the following when explaining her injury, “I unfortunately been having some issues with my pec muscle… right now I can’t actually serve so it’s actually hard to play when I can’t physically serve. In my doubles yesterday I tried a lot of different tapings and support. It didn’t get a lot better.”
However despite the injury, Serena has seen some minor positives to take from this week at Roland Garros, “Every match has been getting better, physically I’ve been great. I can only take solace in the fact that I’m going to get better.”
Serena will now have some MRI tests on her arm in the next few days which will decide whether she will play the grass court season.
