World No. 1 Rafael Nadal is one of the biggest favourites for the title at Wimbledon 2018, according to defending champion Roger Federer.
Federer, who made his much-awaited return to action at the Mercedes Cup in Stuttgart, is the pundits’ pick to lift a record extending ninth trophy at the hallowed lawns of the All England Club next month. The 36-year-old Basel native started his grass-court campaign on a winning note, earning a come from behind 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory over the German Mischa Zverev on Wednesday. Federer can replace Nadal from the top of the rankings by claiming his 98th career title this week in Germany.
However, the 20-time Grand Slam champion insisted Nadal, who captured an incredible 11th crown at the French Open last week, would be in ‘great shape’ for Wimbledon and will be his main rival at the tournament in London.
With former three-time champion Novak Djokovic and home hope Andy Murray, who will be making a return to competitive tennis almost certainties at the event, Federer will have a far difficult draw to deal with as compared to 2017.
“He’ll be in great shape for Wimbledon,” said Federer of the 11-time Roland Garros winner.
“Otherwise I haven’t thought too much about who could be favourite. Rafa’s won Wimbledon twice, so he’s no one-trick pony.
“He’s become better from year to year. He’s playing more aggressive and better on fast surfaces.
“He’s not only the king of clay, he can play well everywhere. Then you also have (Marin) Cilic, (Juan Martin) Del Potro and, I hope, Novak (Djokovic) will come back strong.
“He has already shown good tennis this year. I also hope that (Andy) Murray and Stan (Wawrinka) will come back.
“And I’ve probably forgotten one or two players now…”
Asked about World No. 3 Alexander Zverev’s chances, the Swiss added: “I think he will have a good year. He’s learned a lot from his five set matches in Paris.
“He’s already played great in Miami. He’s also shown how great he can play on grass. His service and his return open up all possibilities for him.”
