The opening day of action at Roland Garros saw 2017 champion Jelena Ostapenko crashed out of the competition to Kateryna Kozlova.
The Latvian, who won her first professional title at the tournament 12 months ago, was shy of her best form as she produced 13 double faults and 48 unforced errors. Becoming only the second defending champion to crash out in the first round of the French Open 12 months after winning the title. The first was Anastasia Myskina back in 2005. Also joining Ostapenko on the casualty list is Venus Williams, who went out in straight sets to China’s Wang Qiang.
