Monica Puig said she was delighted at her second round performance as she stunned the world number two Caroline Wozniacki 0-6 6-4 6-4.
The match seemed to be out of Puig’s reach as Wozniacki showed her champion’s quality after the Dane secured the first set with ease in 30 minutes. However the Puerto Rican came back fighting and showed her grit and determination to battle back as she sealed a historic win in just under two hours.
After the match Puig said she was delighted as Olympic flashbacks came back to the world number 82, “It felt like Rio all over again. I have been waiting for this and to finally start finding myself again,” Puig said. “I just tried to stay positive, I didn’t think I played that poorly in the first set. She’s a great player so I had to stay focused and keep fighting.”
Despite an impressive win from the Olympic champion, Caroline Wozniacki’s struggles were apparent and her latest defeat means that she cannot mount a challenge for the world number one spot. The Dane will lose 640 points this week and a deep run from Garbine Muguruza could mean that she could lose her world number two this week.
However its Monica Puig who advances to the third round, where she will face Maria Sakkari on Sunday. The result also means that one of Puig, Sakkari, Danielle Collins or Donna Vekic will make the Quarter-Finals here in Miami.
