Fabio Fognini celebrated his sixth career title in winning the Sao Paulo title in Brazil on Sunday. The 30 year-old defeated the in-form Chilean Nicolas Jarry, coming from behind in the three sets win.
Fognini used his post-match presentation ceremony to address the death of footballer Davide Astori.
The Fiorentina captain and former Italy international passed away in his sleep overnight at the age of 31. He had also represented AC Milan, Cagliari, and Roma in a distinguished career. He earned 14 international caps for Italy, and scored one goal for the Azzurri.
Fognini said, simply: “This trophy is for Davide Astori.”
Having won his first title of 2018, and moving back into the Top 20, Fognini’s attentions will now turn to the ‘Sunshine Double’ in the United States. It consists of two Masters 1000 tournaments in Indian Wells, California, and Miami, Florida.
