Once told by a doctor that he is too short to be able to compete at the top level of tennis, Diego Schwartzman continues to defy the odds by claiming his biggest title yet at the Rio Open.
The 25-year-old Argentine dominated his final encounter against Spanish veteran Fernando Verdasco, winning 6-2, 6-3, in 83 minutes. During their clash, Schwartzman dismantled the serve of his opponent from the onset. Breaking three times in the first set and once in the second. In contrast, 34-year-old Verdasco struggled with his movement and error count as the match progressed.
“I know it is not easy to see an Argentine win here. But thanks for the support.” Schwarzman joked with the Brazilian crowd during the trophy ceremony.
Hitting 15 winners and 15 unforced errors, he has two reasons to celebrate. Apart from winning his first ATP 500 title, he is set to break into the world’s top 20 for the first time on Monday. Joining compatriot Juan Martin del Potro in the group. Amid the jubilation, an emotional Schwartzman dedicated his latest win to his family.
“This title is for my family, my friends and my aunt who is having a hard time.” He said.
Runner-up Verdasco can also draw positives from his week in Rio. The Spaniard was contesting his 23rd ATP final and his first for 11 months. Verdasco knocked out Dominic Thiem (his first win over a top 10 player this season) and Fabio Fognini earlier in the tournament.
“Diego played amazingly during the week. You deserve the title.” He said. “It was a special week for me, I really wanted to come to Rio. It was almost a perfect week.”
Nicknamed El Peque (shorty), 5” 7’ Schwartzman takes home with him 500 ranking points and $265, 560 in prize money. He is set to rise top a ranking high of 18th on Monday.
